PE at Broomhill Junior School

At Broomhill Junior School we believe that all children should enjoy the lifelong benefits that come from sport. Our PE provision across the school is delivered and designed with the aim to foster this within all pupils as well as ensuring that pupils receive the PE entitlement as set out in the National Curriculum 2014 as well as other experiences and opportunities that best meet the learning and development needs of the children in our school.

Here, we strongly believe that physical activity and PE has the power to develop, improve and support physical, mental, emotional and social well-being, helping to develop important life and leadership skills. The Youth Sport Trust states that increased daily activity and access to high quality PE and sport leads to improved physical, social, cognitive and emotional wellbeing. The PE and physical activity that is delivered across the school has a positive, exciting approach to healthy and active lifestyles, which helps to develop a lifelong habit of participation in sport. As a result, there is increased progress, achievement and attainment as well as the gaining of skills for life. It is these skills for life, which are particularly important for the pupils at Broomhill.

In Physical Education at Broomhill Junior School, teachers provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this through a range of differentiation strategies:

  • Setting common tasks that are open-ended and can have a variety of results
  • Setting tasks of appropriate levels, where all children are challenged to improve according to their individual ability
  • Providing a range of challenge through the provision of different high quality resources

Please take a look at our Physical Education skills progression ladder here to see how it develops throughout our school.

Our Intent

The aim of physical education is to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Children are taught to observe the conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators. Children take part in games, gymnastic movement, dance and athletic activities using indoor and outdoor environments where appropriate.

There are also planned opportunities for active learning across the curriculum to meet the recommended thirty minutes of physical activity per day. Children can take part in after school clubs and have regular opportunities to compete against other schools. Children are given the opportunity to go on two residentials during their time with us. Children have swimming lessons in year 3/4 then again in Year 5/6. Physical education is seen as key to developing healthy lifestyles in our children and at Broomhill we provide a wide array of opportunities to develop this and sporting skills outside of the normal curriculum time. Regular lunch time clubs, Daily Mile, Football Club, and Young Ambassadors etc. encourage children to be as physically active as possible. Extra-Curricular Clubs are very popular, and there are a variety of clubs available for our children. These include football, netball, rounder’s, cricket, computer club, gardening, athletics etc.

Playtimes are an important part of our children being happy, healthy and ready to learn. We have well-staffed and equipped playgrounds, a sports field and an all-weather pitch.

PE and Sport Premium for Primary Schools

The school receives additional funds to support the development of Physical Education and Sport in school (Sport Premium). This money is in addition to the curriculum funding for PE and Sport from the main school budget. The way in which we have spent our sports premium is attached below.

At Broomhill we are continuously using the funding to secure improvements in the following 5 key indicators:

  • The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  • The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement.
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • Increased participation in competitive sport

Please see below our more recent reports which show:

  • the amount of PE and sport premium received
  • a full breakdown of how it has been spent
  • the impact the school has seen on pupils’ PE, physical activity, and sport participation and attainment
  • how the improvements will be sustainable in the future
